Spade end hook by hand II
Tying Knots

This is a quite a quick way to tie spade end hooks by hand once you’ve practised it a few times and probably easier than the other method showed on this site.
This one is easier especially on small hooks, wastes almost no line, and allows you to tie long hooklengths of the same length.
The other one (Method 1) is harder to master, but more secure.
Also, with thicker line like 0.14mm plus, the hook doesn’t always hang brilliantly with this one.
The difficult bit is trapping the line on the shank at the start of the whipping, without it popping out all the time.
With line thinner than the one used in this sequence, the way to do it is to make three careful turns up the shank to trap things, and then whip neatly down the shank.
Improve Your Coarse Fishing

1.

1.
Measure your length of hooklength line against a ruler or something similar so that it’s the same length every time.

2.

2.
Make a large loop then cross the two ends across each other as shown, leaving about an inch of each loose end free both ends.

3.

3.
Lay the shank of the hook against the doubled up line and trap in left hand (I’m right handed) with about an inch of tag above and below.

4.

4.
Carefully whip up the shank with the ‘loop’ line. Each turn must trap the loose end to the shank to ensure a good hold.

5.

5.
Make three careful turns up the shank to trap it and then whip down the shank. After 8-10 turns stop whipping.

6.

6.
Wet the knot with spittle and grab loose end above the shank with right hand or between your teeth. Start to pull this loose end steadily.

7.

7.
The large loop will start to close on the knot. If the line above the hook kinks, your whippings are too tight

8.

8.
When the loop has nearly closed, twist the whipping so that the line above the hook comes off the front of the spade. This is important.

9.

9.
Pull tight both loose ends to tighten the knot. I trap the loose end below the hook between my teeth. Check strength as shown .

Trim loose end tight to the hook after tightening
